Michael Stoute Epsom Derby Profile

Born in Barbados, Michael Stoute was fascinated by horses from a young age and became a regular at his local racecourse, Garrison Savannah. He moved to Britain in 1965 where he joined Pat Rohan at Malton before moving onto Newmarket. He also worked for Doug Smith and Tom Jones before setting up his own stables in 1972.

Taking out a public licence to train in 1972 he didn't have to wait long for his first winner when Sandal won at Newmarket on April 28th of the same year.

In a career spanning over thirty years Michael Stoute has amassed an excellent record in both domestic and international racing. His list of races won include, the Dubai World Cup, the Breeders Cup, the Japan Cup and the Hong Kong Vase. Stoute's domestic record is just as impressive, including perhaps the most famous Derby winner of all time Shergar. He is a trainer who is very much in demand and his record speaks for itself. He has won 13 English Classics: four Derbies, two Oaks, two 1,000 Guineas and has a fantastic record in the 2,000 Guineas, which he has won five times. He also has 45 Royal Ascot wins under his belt and numerous other victories at the highest level, in Britain and abroad.

In 2003 his horses won nearly £3.6m in prize-money between them, which was nearly twice as much as that of his nearest rival - Mark Johnston.

In 2004 Sir Michael won his fourth Derby with North Light. This was also his second successive victory in the race, following success with Kris Kin in 2003.

The reputation Michael Stoute has built up can be illustrated with the list of owners that currently employ his expertise. With patrons such as the Aga Khan, Sheikh Mohammed, Highclere Racing and Prince Khalid Abdulla it is highly likely the Stoute stable will every chance of more success this season.
